Solidarity as an Emotion: American Jews and Israel in 1948

American Jewish support for Israel during the 1948 Arab-Israeli War was in part result of an emotional mobilization. fundraisers constructed extensive public-relations apparatus and formulated strategies honoring supporters shaming shirkers. They, along with journalists press, interpreted events through lens information provided by newly formed Israeli government. Fundraising, however, could succeed only responding to donors’ proclivities, expressions solidarity media were laterally reinforcing as well shaped from top down. These findings underscore role positive emotions generating “groupness.”
